Lowerhouse v Rishton

The captain, Brian Higgin, is watched by Philip Astin, Clive Chell, Stanley Heaton, John Suddick, Robert Spencer and (in front) D. Sheridan and N. Hodgson.
Rain and drizzle failed to deter the youngsters of Lowerhouse and Rishton in the A teams final at the West End on Sunday, 13th September 1970, and it was only when the wicket became too saturated that the match was adjourned with Rishton having scored 110 for eight in the allotted 30 overs and the home side being 32 for one.

A meeting of league representatives and captains decided to continue at 11 o’clock on Sunday. Lowerhouse met with early success and Rishton had three wickets down for 25 with John Sudall taking a hat-trick of catches in the slips off Philip Astin’s bowling. A determined partnership between Ian Welsh (46) and B. Riley (30 not out) held up the West Enders until Welsh became the first of four batsmen to be run out. Leighton James took the other wicket, Bob Spencer taking the catch. Astin captured three for 12 in seven overs.

Lowerhouse, after fielding in the drizzle had to contend with the fading light when they replied and the Rishton bowlers were handicapped by a wet ball. Astin was run out for 13 and N. Hodgson (14 not out) and L. James (4 not out) were batting when rain finally drove them to the pavilion for the last time.
