1982: Cricket row “worst ever” versus Todmorden

An interesting piece to add to the History Books sees a write up in the Burnley Express about a game versus Todmorden. Over appealing and negative bowling contributed to some Lowerhouse fans getting rowdy and some Todmorden players and officials leaving scared for their safety… I wasn’t born, so not guilty!

Neville Sutcliffe from Todmorden commented:

I was there that day, I remember it was a bit of an iffy pitch and Rod kept bowling short stuff. Radio lancs had to stop broadcasting, locals were rocking the van as TCC secretary Bob Brierley was being interviewed. ?

As did Stuart Priestly:

Played in that game as a young 15 year old !!! Good introduction to league cricket. Can’t remember the crowd being that aggressive and yes some of my team mates revelled in the atmosphere!

Stan added:

The radio broadcast was “And as we speak the Lowerhouse supporters are rocking the van” in the background over the radio you could hear “Number 9, come out you b******”
