Craig Light gets his new bat from Richard Kata.
Lowerhouse CC’s new South African professional Craig Light had a shattering experience before having the chance to make his mark at the West End. He suffered an unlucky break when he broke his bat right down the middle during net practice on the eve of the new Marsden Building Society Lancashire League season. A visit to cricket equipment manufacturers Gunn and Moore at their factory in Nottingham proved fruitless as it was closed when Craig arrived on Friday. However, the owner of local sports shop Moresport of Standish Street, Burnley, Mr. Richard Kata, came to the rescue on hearing of Light’s plight and duly supplied him with a bat of his choice the day before the game.
The rest is history, Light hit an undefeated 122 and was the senior contributor in a vital unbroken 153 run partnership with captain Gary Moorhouse, which sealed a four point haul against Ramsbottom in their opening fixture. The bat broken in the nets was not considered to be a lucky charm for him and held no superstitious value enabling Light to take his new bat without regret and score his debut century. The West End professional will continue to use his new bat on Sunday for Lowerhouse away at Todmorden. Everyone at Lowerhouse hopes that the West Enders will be able to build on that opening day win. “It was a dream start for us,” said Moorhouse this week. “I was glad to be at the other end during most of Craig’s innings. It was good from a club point of view as it allowed me to have a close look at his strengths. It was also good for me from a personal point of view as I had the chance of a good innings early in the season. The way we batted covered up a few mistakes in their innings and hopefully we can cut those mistakes out in the next few weeks. Craig has brought with him some interesting personal fitness ideas and intends to help us tidy up our personal reactions as well.”
