1995: Lowerhouse still in debt

A sombre read from the Lancashire Evening Telegraph in 1995.

LOWERHOUSE CC continued their financial progress with a profit of £1,850 last year.

But treasurer David Wren says everything in the West End garden is far from rosy, with the club still in debt, more income and helpers needed, and a generally apathetic membership.

The most pleasing aspect of the last financial year for the Marsden BS Lancashire Cricket League club was the repayment of the remaining £3,000 of personal loans.

“The club and all members must ensure that the need for such commitment ‘over and above the call of duty’ is never repeated,” said Mr Wren in his review.

He stressed the fact that, despite the financial progress, Lowerhouse continue to fail to win trophies.

“There is still much to be done,” he warned.

Mr Wren was also concerned on a wider level after a glorious summer and a more entertaining team had failed to encourage a surge in gates or membership.

“The posing of pertinent questions regarding the future of the Lancashire League and what we can do about the general decline need to be quickly addressed,” he added.
