A Little Bit Of History…..

The club has been contacted in recent weeks with Stan Heaton on the subject of past players

Helen Davenport sent us the attached photo and article from her grandfather and former pro James Atherton and the following information

“I am tracing the history of my family and find that my paternal grandfather James Henry Atherton played for Lowerhouse Cricket Club around the time of the First World War. He was the Club’s professional in l914 but was killed on 24th Sept 1918 while a Corporal in the Machine Gun Corps. He is buried in France .

Apparently he also played football (goalkeeper) for Eccles AFC and York City . We have a photograph of him in cricket gear (apparently a right hand bat). Can you please help me with more information re my grandfather? There is some suggestion that he was signed up to become a professional in Australia after the war ended but his death ended that”.

There are 2 matches on the Lancashire League website featuring James Atherton from his time at Lowerhouse in the 1914 archive.
