Sad news – Arthur Greenwood Obituary

Lowerhouse Cricket Club are saddened to hear of the passing of Arthur Greenwood.

Arthur, along with Roule Reeve and Herbert Marsden was the originator of the club’s modern 3rd eleven in the 1970s.

This was a move that was ahead of its time as the Lancashire League did not have a 3rd eleven at that time and the club played in the now defunct North East Lancs League.

An entire generation had their introduction to senior cricket through the Third Eleven and were brought up to play the game in the right way by Arthur.

Arthur played the game in a tough but unassuming way. We played hard to win but without any nastiness or dramas. We were taught how to conduct ourselves and how to behave in order to get the best out of ourselves.

Arthur was very dedicated to local sport. Many of us played under him at football as well as cricket.  After his playing days ended, Arthur gave even more back to the game as an umpire, where he was always there with a word of advice or encouragement.

Many players and clubs throughout the area owe a lot to Arthur and he will be sorely missed.

We send our deepest sympathy to the family
