Burnley District Cricket Report

The 2016 District cricket campaign, once again saw the town punch well above its weight.

With only 3 clubs to choose from, we are often up against Districts choosing from clubs numbering in double figures.

The successful season is reflected in the awards listed at the end of this report detailing the outstanding individual performances from the District teams.

Firstly I would like to thank all those involved in the District programme.

Particularly managers Dave Nicholas (u15s), Wendy Taylor (u13s) and Charlie Cottam (u11s).

In addition I would like to thanks both Burnley and Lowerhouse Cricket Clubs for hosting the games, and for providing tea room facilities.

I would like also to thank the tea room staff at the district games – namely our wonderful mums and all parents who provided the food for our team, the opposition and the officials. As Chairman I am very pleased and indeed proud of the efforts that we make to put district cricket on, and with such aplomb.

The under 15s got off to a disastrous start losing the first two games v Wyre and Ribble Valley  and looked well of the standard. Pride kicked in and the second two games were astonishing performances.

Scores of 339-6 v South Ribble and 251-8 v Hyndburn saw the team get through to the quarter finals as league runners up and a defeat v Rochdale. Rochdale were the eventual competition winners.

The u13s also progressed to the quarter finals as league runners up . Again opening  defeats to South Ribble and Ribble valley were followed by resounding victories over Blackpool/Fylde 249-5 and Hyndburn 214-6. Unfortunately the quarter final could not be played due to unforeseen  circumstances and we had to concede. A great pity indeed.

Stars of the show were the u11s who progressed to the grand final only to finish as runners up after meeting  an extremely strong Salford team with numerous County players.

The team won the league with a maximum 4 victories against Hyndburn, Blackburn, Ribble Valley and Blackpool. A quarter final victory over the formidable Bolton was followed by a semi-final victory over Chorley. This was an outstanding performance indeed and bodes well for the future.
