Burnley v Lowerhouse

Lowerhouse claimed the first bragging rights of the season over Burnley with a gutsy victory at Turf Moor on Sunday.

On what appeared to be a clear and sunny afternoon, the hosts elected to bat first and made a brisk start with David Brown striking a succession of boundaries. However, he was stopped in his tracks by a perfect full ball on 19 from Cobus Pienaar which sent the stumps flying. Jon Finch entered the attack and struck immediately with the wicket of Dan Pickup (16). Joe Hawke then got involved in the afternoon’s proceedings by trapping Stephen Brunt LBW and also showed some excellent nous by running out ex Houser Bharat Tripathi when he left his bat out of his crease after prodding a delivery straight back to the seamer. Professional Chris Holt played well for his 29 but he couldn’t prevent the steady flow of wickets, particular from Pienaar who bowled out Tomlinson (5), Kelly (12), Mortimer (2) and got Liaqat (0) LBW to finish with superb figures of 6/22 (his best so far). Matt Walker took the final wicket of innings with a Ct & B to dismiss Graham Lalor as Burnley finished on a paltry 107 all out with 7 overs of the innings remaining.

Lowerhouse made a confident start to their innings with Jon Finch picking off the opening bowlers with ease in the early overs. The introduction of Holt, though, put an end to that when he deceived the opener on 14. Jonny Whitehead (1) then also fell victim to Holt in the next over. The visitors were looking to stage a recovery before Heap (17), Walker (0), Joe Martin (1) and Chris Bleazard (1) all departed for a total of 3 runs (Holt and Lalor picking up 2 wickets during this period) to leave the score 59 for 6 and place Burnley as favourites. However, amongst the constant loss of wickets, Pienaar was still there as he was joined at the crease by Hawke. Lowerhouse’s number 8 did a great of grinding out deliveries and frustrating Burnley’s bowlers. At the other end, Pienaar kept his discipline and got Lowerhouse back in front with some steady scoring. The comeback was complete when the South African placed the ball past the vacant slip cordon for 4 to finish on 43* (and complete a great individual performance from him). Lowerhouse finished their victorious innings on 111 for 6 with 9.3 overs still to play.

MOM was Joe Hawke for his 1/19 off 7 overs and 15* (MOM for Saturday’s win at Colne was Ben Heap for his 49). A bumper weekend in store next weekend as Lowerhouse begin the defence of their Twenty20 trophy at Nelson on Friday night then travel to East Lancs on Saturday before playing their first home game since 17th May as Enfield visit the Neville Gee (Recruitment) Arena.
