Darren Lehman delights the House!

Following on from previous successful evenings, on Thursday 22 August 2019, the club welcomed former international cricketer and coach of Australia Mr Darren Lehmann to the club for An Evening with Darren Lehmann.

Darren was joined by former Yorkshire wicket keeper Richard Blakey who got the evening underway with questions for Darren with regards the current Ashes series and the ongoing match, questions about Darren’s own cricketing playing career plus his very successful coaching career.

Darren provided candid and open views on the state of the current game, his own countries chances of winning the Ashes and the chances of England winning the Ashes.

It was always going to be a topic of conversation to be brought up and Darren did not shy away when asked about the “Sandpaper Gate” incident in South Africa which brought shame on the game and his nation and ultimately brought a premature end to his coaching of the national Australia side.

Whether guests in attendance believed Darren is down to them but it brought very interesting topics of conversation about what goes on at Test and County level and the pressures players are under to win at all costs.

Darren gave a very interesting insight into the poor performances of the Umpires throughout the current Test series and his own personal view was that the best Umpires available should officiate in the Ashes, even if they were from England or Australia.

He also had a view on the DRS system and that he would do away with limited reviews and allow DRS to remove absolute howlers by Umpires to reach the correct result of a match, he must have been able to see what was coming three days later!!!!

Following a break for refreshments, Darren took questions from the floor for over an hour and again, did not shy away from anything asked of him.

Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable evening for those that attended who had the opportunity to not only listen to a player and coach who has practised at the highest level but also interact and ask questions of him.

Big thank you to Darren Lehmann for coming to visit us at Lowerhouse Cricket Club, much appreciation to Richard Blakey of Richard Blakey Leisure for facilitating the night.

Massive thanks to all that attended and supported the evening, thanks again to J W Lees for their support on the night and continued support of the club and to Frank Entwistle for providing the pie and pea supper.
