Lowerhouse lost the toss and were asked to field as Walsden chose to bat first. What followed was a rip-roaring opening spell from Tom Walker, who tore through the top order with devastating precision. Backed up by some outstanding glovework from Joe Martin, the opening carnage saw Walsden reeling at 56 for 5. Incredibly, Tom’s first four wickets were all caught behind, highlighting the synergy between bowler and keeper.
Though Walsden mounted a brief resistance, they were eventually bowled out for 150 in 45.1 overs. Tom Walker was the standout with a five-wicket haul, while Paddy Martin chipped in with two valuable wickets.
In reply, Lowerhouse’s innings mirrored Walsden’s early collapse. The top order faltered, and at 63 for 8, the chase looked all but over. But cometh the crisis, cometh the Martins. Brothers Joe and Paddy batted with calm authority, forging a vital 68-run partnership that dragged the House back into the contest.
With just 20 runs to go, Paddy was dismissed, leaving the task to Joe Martin and number 11 Joe Hawke — arguably the most qualified last man in Lancashire League history. The two Joes held their nerve, knocking off the remaining runs with six overs to spare.
A cracking contest between two top sides, and a win that cements Lowerhouse’s place at the summit of the league.
