160 Years – Housecast: Lowerhouse is 160 not out! (ft Anne Cochrane & Paul Hargreaves)

We’ve been working on a project behind the scenes, I say we, Paul and Anne have. This is a special podcast recorded in the clubhouse – let us know what you think of the quality.

160 not out!

Cricket had been played in the village for some time, but in the summer of 1862 two teams, Habergham Garibaldians and Britannia, had merged to form the present club. In August, 1862, some of them went, literally cap in hand, to their boss at John Dugdale and Brothers Cotton Mill, to ask for permission to turn one of his fields into a cricket ground. Cricket being considered a most respectable pastime, James Dugdale lent them the field, rent free, and the story of Lowerhouse Cricket Club began.

In 1914, when the club held a grand fund-raising bazaar, they published a lovely handbook, which included a detailed history of the club to that date. https://view.publitas.com/lowerhouse-cricket-club/lowerhouse-bazaar-1914/page/1

You can also read more on the early years of the club here.

To mark the 160th anniversary, we are delighted to announce a first ever History Books podcast, to accompany a new profile on the website of Tommy Shutt (1875-1952), who was born a stone’s throw from the ground, and who is definitely one of our “Greatest of All Time” players.
