Joey and Firefighters Yorkshire 3 Peak Challenge

Joey, Mike and Phil here, we’re 3 ‘on-call’ firefighters in Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service who in the wake of COVID-19 have kindly stepped forward for a ‘gigantic’ effort to raise money for ‘A Child of Mine’ and ‘The Firefighters Charity’ by taking on the Yorkshire 3 peaks. We realise this is a challenge in itself, however we have decided to set ourselves a greater task of wearing full fire kit and carrying a Breathing Apparatus Set throughout our journey. Doing this adds approximately 30kg of weight per person. Our challenge will be taking place on Saturday 8th August 2020.

OUR CHOSEN CHARITIES

A Child of Mine was established in 2013 after A Child of Mine’s founder lost her beautiful 2 year old son to Cancer. His death highlighted a need in the bereavement support for parents and a lack of information, generally for families experiencing this trauma. As a result, the charity was set up to provide emotional support to families who have lost a child, helping them to stay positive and find hope for the future. Through their work with this vulnerable group they aim to reduce isolation and improve emotional well-being. They offer support to anyone who has been affected by the death of a child at any age and under any circumstance. This includes bereaved parents, siblings and grandparents. They provide direct support within Staffordshire however offer virtual video-calling support to anywhere within the UK. Along with 1-2-1 support sessions, they run 7 monthly support groups for bereaved parents, including specific groups for miscarriage and stillbirths. They also run a monthly playgroup for bereaved parents who have other children as well as a group for teenagers that have lost a sibling. They also work with healthcare professionals and children’s hospitals across the UK, training staff from the perspective of the parents.

The Firefighters Charity provides services that enhance quality of life for serving and retired fire fighters, fire personnel and their families through a range of support programmes including physical rehabilitation, psychological support, recuperation and a confidential helpline which provides impartial advice, guidance and support on a wide range of concerns. They know that everybody is different, that no two injuries are the same and that no two people may be affected in the same way by incidents they experience. The personalised support can involve one or more possible pathways, delivered in a number of different ways – over the phone, online using digital technology, out in your local community or at one of their centres: Harcombe House in Devon, Jubilee House in the Lake District or Marine Court in West Sussex. Their aim, is always the same; to help them move forward positively in their life.

During these unprecedented times we are aware that charities and organisations aren’t hitting their usual targets from fundraising events nor are they getting the necessary help they require. We believe that A Child of Mine helps parents and siblings through terribly life changing events and know how dedicated and passionate these people are to offer such amazing care to families at their time of need.

The Firefighters Charity has been chosen by us as we believe they offer immense support to firefighters and their families nationally, and know first hand the importance such a service has to the dedicated firefighters who have provided a vital service to the UK throughout their career. The service is well equipped to provide firefighters and their families with emotional and practical help when they need it most. It is imperative that funding for this charity is continued as without it they would not be able to access the services that they so greatly need and could ultimately have a detrimental affect on their emotional well-being and need for practical assistance.
