5th July 1893 League Committee Minute:
Resolved that best thanks of League be given to Mr. Knowles of Colne for walking to Bacup on July 1st in order to fulfil duty as Umpire.
(He had been given very short notice that he was to umpire, and walked from Burnley to Bacup, presumably as no other option was available to him.)
From The District News, July 22nd 1898 reporting on Haslingden v Todmorden
“The Haslingden team came in a waggonette via Bacup and were about two and a half hours on the way.”
(A four-wheeled horse-drawn vehicle, typically open, with facing side seats and one or two seats arranged crosswise in front. )
Amazing Gates
On September 8th and 10th, 1900 Haslingden and Church having tied for first place at the end of the season, played a two-day title decider, at Accrington’s ground. On Saturday some 8500 people paid their sixpence to watch, and on the Monday another 8,000 turned up.
