Marvellous Merv

Last night will live long in the memory of those who attended Lowerhouse Cricket Club for the “Evening with Merv Hughes Event”
Following on from our previous “An Evening with ” series, Jeff Thomson (2001) and Barry Richards (2002) the illustrious and larger than life Merv Hughes now adds his name for 2013 to a list we will look to extend in the near future.

Merv delivered a superb speech delivering a mix on his youth and development into cricket, his thoughts on current and past players and the state of the game today. This was followed by questions and answers session and his mischievous sense of humour brought the ‘House’ down.

Club Secretary Frank Entwistle said

“We’re delighted with the response to last night’s event, it’s the culmination of a lot of hard work behind the scenes and been a definite success in terms of PR.

Merv was warmly received and finished to a standing ovation.

We feel we made yet another stride in organising and delivering what our members and cricket fans alike want. It was a fair ticket price when you consider the albeit with a comedian you’ll have to pay £45 in Birmingham in October.

We would however like to place on record our grateful thanks to Howard & Graham at Heinekin our brewery.

They came up trumps and answered our call to sponsor the event and yesterday went the extra mile turned up with 2 tickets for today’s 1st test which were auctioned and made the club a few bob I really can’t thank them enough.

I also need to thank Johnny Russell & The Ark Caterer’s for providing the superb catering for this event.

Finally we must once again say a big thank-you to Tony Woodworth.

Since March he’s worked hard to bring this all together he’s worth his weight in gold”

Photos from Bob Sandiford will be live on the site tonight.
