Match Reports vs Burnley (Away) 2015

The eagerly awaited derby clash between the top 2 in the Foster’s Lancashire League eventually got underway at 2:20 at the MyProtein Turf Moor. Lowerhouse included Dominic Stuart, whilst Burnley omitted Graham Lalor from their starting line up, but nevertheless, the leaders still fielded a strong side that has been beaten only once so far this season.

House captain Charlie Cottam won the toss and invited Burnley to bat first in a game reduced to 38 overs per side. From the start, it appeared that Burnley had a definite game plan and attacked the House opening pair of Pienaar and Walker, playing shots that wouldn’t have gone amiss in a Friday night T20. Tripathi rode his luck and survived a dropped catch in the 2nd over and Holt managed to evade the fielders until both fell in quick succession after the introduction of Fergus Bailey, the professional Holt (25) and Tripathi (18) at 42 and 43 respectively. Derbyshire all-rounder Jonathan Clare was Bailey’s 3rd victim, caught by Pienaar to leave Burnley on 47-3.

Any optimism that the House followers were gaining from the breakthrough slowly faded away as Burton and Brown started to rebuild the innings. Burton supported the ex-Gloucestershire and Glamorgan man as it then turned into the David Brown show. After a scratchy start and being dropped on 10, Brown batted himself in and then started to unleash some brutal blows as he compiled what became the match winning innings.

Burton was bowled by Pienaar for a battling 25, followed by Kelly for a first ball duck, the score on 119-5. Brown continued to farm the strike, Walker bowled Burnley skipper Bharat Tripathi for 3, Brunt became Pienaar’s third victim for 1, but Brown had enabled the league leaders to amass 153-7. Another partnership with Hayman (3 not out) added 19 to finish the innings on a daunting 172-7 from their 38 overs, Brown making an impressive 93 not out. Bailey took 3-35 and Pienaar 3-58.

I won’t mention the six on the football ground roof…..

The House innings started warily against Clare and the pace of Hayman, Burnley obviously buoyed by the impressive runs on the board. Whitehead was bowled for 1 and Joe Martin harshly given leg before wicket for 6. With the score on 18-2, the skipper and Pro looked to consolidate and build the foundations for the House to get back into the game. The Burnley attack was giving nothing away and the introduction of paid man Holt really turned the screw. He picked up the wickets of Cottam (5), Walker (9) and Dec Bailey (2) before some dogged resistance from Paddy Martin and Fergus Bailey tried to restore some respectability to the House scorecard. Bailey fell for 11 to Tripathi, Martin controversially caught behind for 15. Marsden hit a couple of nice shots to get off the mrk, but when Stuart was caught for 0, the House innings ended in the 29th over with Bleazard unable to bat due to an ankle injury sustained whilst fielding. Holt finished with figures of 5-27.

Lowerhouse will be disappointed to suffer their first defeat of the season in such circumstances to their arch rivals, but they will be looking to bounce back against bottom side Colne on Sunday.
