Cricket matters
As publicised, a meeting took place between members of the League Executive, Burnley CC and me, Charlie Cottam and Matt Stansfield at Burnley CC on Tuesday evening. The meeting was called to try and establish some method of ensuring that on – field discipline is maintained in our fixtures together.
We give our assurance that we will endeavour to maintain on field discipline and if there is a failure, it will be dealt with robustly. Meanwhile, the district and junior teams continue to flourish together, and we look forward to the u19T20 at Burnley on Friday evening.
The big test will be the 2XI cup match at LHCC on Saturday and the players need to be under no illusion that they will be under severe scrutiny from officials from both sides, league officials and of course , the umpires. Enough said!
Well done
On a similar theme can I make comment on two visiting teams who did themselves and their club proud, and sadly in sharp contrast to the norm.
Firstly , the Rishton 1XI T20 team left their changing room in a spotless condition . Usually one can fill a dustbin with items strewn on the floor. Back in the day, upon making one’s debut, you were told in no uncertain terms that litter went in the bin, crockery and glasses were returned to the tea room and bar. I can to this day remember that speech from Ian Wrigley ( 2XI) and Brian Higgin 1XI ).
Secondly, the sportsmanship shown by Tony Shackleton and the Enfield 1XI lastSunday was outstanding. Although on the receiving end of the rain rules , they accepted their fate with good grace and did their utmost to get the game completed even though it meant certain defeat . On top of that , the team came in the bar afterwards and had a couple of drinks, which is unusual at 3XI . Well done to Tony and his team.
Thanks
On a personal note may I thank all those people who have offered their congratulations to me on my recent award. I have managed to thank those who have texted but have yet to tackle Facebook. I will as soon as I can. I have been astonished by the number of junior players who have shaken my hand and this is great credit to those juniors and their parents.
I would also like to thank the late David Wren, Ray Bradley, Chris Bleazard and Harry Brooks for the 4 years’ worth of work that had gone into the application. I know that this involved support from other people and I will also thank those people in person.
Off – field news
As the neighbourhood continues to recover from the floods, many thanks to the usual team who worked diligently to bring the ground back to normality. Although we have had some ruination of items in the groundsman’s hut, the ground itself recovered very quickly and incredibly a kwik cricket match took place at 10am the following morning. We have yet to hear anything from Barnfield Construction in respect of the water coming on to our land from their land.
