Obituary

The club were sorry to hear of the death of John Neville Hitchen. Known to all as Neville, he was a long-time member of the club having originally been a Colne player. Neville was an early neighbour of club stalwarts Malcolm and Barbara Blackhurst and all sat together at matches. We send our deepest sympathy to the family and thank them for designating the club for funeral donations. The club were represented at the funeral.

Old pals

Former opening bowler Neil Hodgson sends greetings to old pals at the club. Still in the area, Neil follows the club on the website and was seen recently in the Fence Gate with former Padiham stalwart, Vincent Daly. Neil was a member of the successful u18 team in the early 70s and went on to take 50 first team league wickets for the club. Neil was one of the quickest bowlers around at the time and had the happy knack of getting professionals out. Among his victims were record breaking legends Collis King , Peter Swart and Aftab Baloch — all twice in the same seasons .  Hope to see you soon Neil.

Visited recently former Secretary and Treasurer Joe Waterworth who is 96 years old. Joe was a fine raconteur and still has a twinkle in his eye. Known for his prodigious memory Joe, along with Jack Foster has often been a reference point for information from bygone days. Joe was one of the small group of people who kept the club afloat during the dark days and is pleased to see us in a far healthier position.

Supporter Tony Mason has been in touch with Jim Minhas and Tony passes on Jim’s comments regarding the recent contact with him, and our features on the website. Jim says “It was a wonderful surprise and hope we shall keep regular contact. Lowerhouse was and still is my second home. Lowerhouse and Todmorden people were my families. There are great memories of fifteen years that I spent with you people and would like to be kept updated on how life is treating them”
