We had a very welcome visitor in recent weeks when Ken Smith cycled on to the ground . This was Ken’s first return in over 50 years to a ground that he graced particularly as a spin bowler. I was delighted to be able to chat with Ken, who I had never met but had heard of thanks to a great tale told by Ian Wrigley, my first 2XI captain. Its too long a tale to recount here but I will happily tell it to those who wish to hear it in person . The tale involves the great West Indian quickie Wesley Hall felling the late Jack Salkeld with Ken the next and final batsman .

Obviously Ken noted the many changes to the ground and was pleased to hear that team mates Jack Foster , Malcolm Blackhurst and Brian Higgin were still involved with the club. Ken retired from the game still at a young age due to work reasons , and judging from his bowling figures, he must have been sorely missed.

Great to see you Ken, and we hope to see you again.

Many thanks to Nigel Stockley for the reproduction of Ken’s figures from the Lancashire League website.

Vinnie Whittaker has repaired the water hogs so that we now have 3 available for action.
Vinnie and John Dawson for their work in repairing the roller and to Carl at Burnley Tool hire for his assistance with a temporary roller.
Bob Spencer, Brian Shaw, Peter Taylor, Vinnie Whittaker, Dave Waddington and Steve Krupinski for their continued work on the ground.

Congratulations

To Grace Johnson who in her first full season in cricket has added to her plaudits by not only getting into the County Girls u11s , but now captaining the team in the recent match v Kent.

Two important matches this weekend for our and the town’s under 11s.
Phil Metcalfe’s under 11s bears are in the County finals on Sunday, our semi-final being at 12.30 at Highfield CC, with hopefully the final to follow mid-afternoon.

On Monday, Charlie Cottam’s district 11s play their final v Salford at Rainford CC. This match starts at 11am. Both these achievements are remarkable and in particular the District one, where we are picking from ourselves and Burnley CC in stark contrast to some districts who have 10 plus clubs to pick from. Good luck to both teams.

Great credit to the Burnley team who were on the receiving end of the rain rules, but clearly wanted to play, and played in great spirit. Thanks to Burnley’s Phil Broadhurst for his assistance with the mopping up.
