The Lowerhouse Canteen

With the sad news of the Lowerhouse Canteen closing down last week after 99 years in business, Anne our historian has done some digging and we’d like to post about  the opening of the canteen in January 1920. (Although we’ve since heard there is a buyer on the cards to help save it and now is re-open!)

Attached is an article posted by Warwick University archive, which was a contemporary article  about the opening of the canteen.

The article Anne also sent  was from the Burnley News, and she has also found an item in the Burnley Express of the same date, which has more photos.  She also noticed an interesting paragraph in the text about the formation of the social club and have clipped  that separately.

Thanks as always Anne to retrieving this part of the villages history.
