Pre – season news
Thank you to those who stood in silence, particularly East Lancs and the Umpires, prior to the start of Sunday’s game in memory of David Wren. This was a sad and poignant moment for all of us. We are getting nearer to the naming of the approach road to the cricket club which will be known as “David Wren Way” and signposted as such.
News of stalwart Donald Coates. Donald is in improving health but has had to relocate to Bingley. He is in touch with us and hopes to attend some games this season. He sends everyone his best wishes
Many thanks to the usual team who have been getting the ground and machinery in shape for the forthcoming season, particularly Ian Ingham who has dug out around the clubhouse for a soakaway. This is in preparation for the upgrading of the roof (done) and ground drainage (pending) and the painting of the back of the clubhouse (commenced)
Work on opening a gate on Liverpool Road is next on the list.
The car park has had a layer of river gravel added to improve the surface particularly in wet weather.
Thanks to Craig Marsden for his work in repairing electrical faults and the assembly of the clock which has been provided by the Hope family in memory of Geoff. The clock sets the changing rooms off nicely and looks most impressive particularly when illuminated.
Ernie Whittaker is currently painting the boundary stones. This is a Herculean task, only matched by Maureen Stansfield who is painting and varnishing the benches. My money is on Maureen to win this race. Many thanks to you both!
Anyone with a few hours to spare can join the “Maintenance Team “.Cups of tea and gratitude provided. Contact Stan Heaton to enroll.
Cricket matters
A great deal of thought and discussion goes into the selection of all teams especially the senior ones. This process can be greatly enhanced by players notifying unavailability by Tuesday morning. Players ought to be mindful that there is competition for places and some reasons for missing a game are more likely to hinder recall than others. For instance we have already had withdrawals for to play in a football cup final, or for school (both valid), and to watch a football match (not valid). Do not be surprised if you are not recalled after missing for an invalid reason. Ask yourself too what this does for the team’s chances in that game and therefore the long term effect on the season, and your relationship with your team mates.
We don’t expect representing Lowerhouse CC to be a ball and chain but we do expect respect and loyalty for the honour of representing the club.
Junior training has started for established squad players and newcomers will now be invited from May 4th (a week later than originally proposed). Any newcomer should contact Stan Heaton first please 07941439741.
Here’s wishing everyone an enjoyable and successful season.
