Lowerhouse Cricket Club are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of David Hirst.
David was a great friend of Lowerhouse and a true stalwart of local cricket. He was hugely influential in the local game, particularly through his work with Burnley Grammar School Old Boys, where many of Lowerhouse’s finest junior cricketers played their very first senior matches — often at just 12 or 13 years old. It proved to be an invaluable learning ground and an important stepping stone in their development.
David himself was a wily bowler and a fine all-round sportsman. Following his retirement from playing, he became a highly respected umpire in the Lancashire League. His deep knowledge of the game and its laws made conversation with him both witty and lively, and it was always a pleasure to be in his company.
We extend our heartfelt sympathy to David’s family at this difficult time.
David’s funeral will take place on Thursday 12th March at 10:45am at Burnley Crematorium, followed by a wake at Burnley Cricket Club. Lowerhouse will be represented at the funeral to pay our respects to a true cricketer and a gentleman.
