Sad news – Joe Waterworth Obituary

We are saddened to announce the passing of former club stalwart and secretary, Joe Waterworth.

Joe was well into his 90s and had been a resident at Eaves Hall of late.

Joe was prominent in the sixties, seventies and eighties and one of the dedicated committee who strove to keep the club alive during those times.

My memories of Joe are of a highly intelligent man who had an amazing memory and was very witty. He cared passionately about the club and was very pleased and proud about our rise from the depths. I often used to ring Joe about old players when relatives contacted us about them. He had no difficulty in detailing players from the 40s and 50s such was his memory.

He had a collection of amusing anecdotes which he used to manage to insert into his addresses at the club AGM to everyone’s delight. Joe enjoyed a vigorous discussion in the clubroom on any given subject and having won the argument would often refer to his opponents loss as a “collapse of a stout party”. The phrase still makes me chuckle.

The club are honoured to have been asked to host Joe’s funeral reception and details will be announced in due course.

We extend our heartfelt sympathies to Joe’s family.
