Lancashire Cup Heartbreak For Lowerhouse At Settle
Lowerhouse made the trip over the border to Settle in Yorkshire 😉 for the First Round of the Lancashire Cup Knockout, a 45-over competition which is apparently Joe Martin’s favourite format.
After winning the toss, Lowerhouse elected to bat first on a surface that offered plenty throughout the afternoon. Runs were hard-earned and despite several batters getting starts, nobody was quite able to go on and post the big score needed.
Dan Salpietro top scored with 34, Francois Haasbroek added 33 and Ben Heap chipped in with 28 as Lowerhouse closed on 178 for 9 from their 45 overs.
Defending what looked a competitive total, Francois Haasbroek rolled back the years with the new ball and alongside Paddy Martin ripped through the Settle top order. The hosts were reduced to 28 for 5 after a superb opening spell from the pair, with Lowerhouse firmly in control.
Settle, however, showed tremendous character and composure to rebuild their innings through a number of important partnerships. With no overs from Tom Walker today as the side managed his workload, the game remained finely balanced throughout the middle overs.
As the tension ramped up, Settle reached 159 for 8 with four overs remaining and the game hanging in the balance. Then came the drama.
With just five balls left in the match and Settle needing four runs, the rain arrived and forced the players from the field. After the brief interruption, the game resumed with nerves shredded on both sides. The first delivery back brought a single. Then, with scores level and one ball remaining, Settle struck a six to complete a remarkable chase and secure victory in an unforgettable cup tie.
Paddy Martin finished with excellent figures of 3 for 35 from his 9 overs, while Francois Haasbroek claimed 3 for 33 from his 9. Toxy Hussain picked up 2 wickets and Oli Williams added 1.
A hugely entertaining game of cricket and one that could have gone either way right until the final ball.
