Lowerhouse’s Tenacity

By Ernie Whittaker

Walking around the ground during the Darwen game I came across a man of the same vintage as me, that is, a fossil. I sat down next to him and we got chatting. He was a Darwen supporter, born and bred in Blackburn and a Rovers supporter. Despite this he struck me as quite intelligent.

He told me how beneficial joining the Lancashire League had been for his club, gates had increased considerably and there was much optimism. The best thing of all he said was no longer having to travel to Netherfield or Kendal for away games. Although I have no official status I welcomed him and his club to The Lancashire League and to our club.

As we chatted we reminisced about the old days. I told him that uptil nearly 15 years ago Lowerhouse had never won anything but since then had been the most successful club in the league although Burnley supporters might question that. He asked me how that came about and I replied that it was due to the dedication if those who manage the club, the volunteers, the team of course and having the best set of devoted supporters in the league

Presently we got on to the game in progress. His view was that 188 would not be enough as Darwen has a powerful batting side. Possibly not I said but no one should ever underestimate Lowerhouse. They never give up I told him. They simply wear the opposition down. Even when things aren’t going too well as in the Worsley Cup final they just won’t give in. It’s like that old music hall song ‘it”s never over till the fat lady sings’. That could well be Lowerhouse’s anthem. It’s tenacity I told him. That’s why we do so well. On that note we shook hands and I left him to enjoy the game.

Oh, and incidentally, 188 proved to be enough.
