1924/1939: A Postcard from the Past: Lowerhouse Pros of Yesteryear

We were recently delighted to receive a slice of Lowerhouse history, courtesy of long-time club friend Anne Cochrane. Anne came across two cricket postcards from Boundary Books and knew straight away the names on them were more than just familiar – they were part of the fabric of Lowerhouse Cricket Club.

The first postcard features the 1939 West Indies touring side, including Manny Martindale, who went on to become our club professional from 1947 to 1950. Martindale, a fearsome fast bowler and trailblazer in West Indian cricket, made a lasting impression during his time at the club – both on and off the field.

The second postcard is a gem from the 1924 South African tour, showcasing Claude Carter, who later served as our club professional in 1925 and 1926. Carter was known for his left-arm spin and brought a wealth of international experience to Lowerhouse during the inter-war years.

These rare finds will be added to our growing archive and are a wonderful reminder of the club’s proud tradition of welcoming world-class professionals over the years.

A big thank you to Anne for her sharp eye and generosity in sharing these with the club. The postcards and photos will be shared below – enjoy this trip through time!
