1975: West End Pair Shatter Church

Todays addition to the History Books has been aquired from BCTHIC.

From a match report by Don Smith:
The West Enders are unbeaten after two matches, with maximum points for dismissing the opposition in each match. The hero of Lowerhouse was Alan Holden who helped to rescue his side from ignominy with a fighting 23 to be the only amateur in the match to score double figures and then shattered Church with six for 20. Trevor Jones, who took four for 27, bowled his medium spin from the park end while Holden varied pace and pitch from the other. The Church supporters who have had some joyful outings to Lowerhouse in recent seasons could not believe it! They had rejoiced as Houldsworth pulverised the Lowerhouse batting having half the side out for 12. Bob Lanchbury stood between the fast bowler and the utter rout of the West Enders, but his side were all out 71. According to the supporters the Church batsmen were supposed to take this moderate score in their stride. Instead they were shot out for a paltry 49.

Lowerhouse made a disastrous start with four wickets down for two runs. Only Bob Lanchbury’s batting brightened the gloom. His off driving was superb and he had the temerity to lift Ahmed over the spectators, over the ice-cream stall and into the car park. He was sixth out trying to cut Houldsworth in the 10th over. John Suddall added some stability to the innings but it was Alan Holden who supplied the latent punch. He thumped a mighty six off the startled Houldsworth, collected runs freely with Church placing five men round the boundary to curb his enthusiasm. When he was run out on a tight second run he had contributed 23 and the innings closed at 71. The Church amateurs showed as much idea as those of Lowerhouse batsmen but it seemed as though Ahmed had the measure of the attack. If he remained and could find someone to stay, Church might struggle to a win. However, he had scored 28 when he received one from Jones which lifted sharply, forced him into playing it and the alert Higgin took the catch. Jones and Holden applied the pressure. Victory was in the air and Church were all out for 49.
