Mixed Day as Second Eleven Cruise

First Eleven Match Report

Lowerhouse v Ramsbottom

Lowerhouse welcomed Ramsbottom to Liverpool Road looking to bounce back after disappointing results on Friday and Saturday.

Ben Heap lost the toss and Lowerhouse were asked to bat on a wicket that had been affected by persistent overnight rain. With plenty of moisture still in the surface, bowling first looked the obvious choice, but Lowerhouse were left with the task of setting a target.

The innings started in spectacular fashion as Ben launched the opening delivery of the match over the boundary for six. However, Ramsbottom quickly found their rhythm, bowling accurately and making full use of the conditions. Lowerhouse slipped to 13 for 4 after just 8.3 overs, with Ben, Henri Cottam, Dan Salpietro and Tom Walker all back in the pavilion.

Francois Haasbroek and Jonny Whitehead then produced an outstanding recovery. Batting with patience and determination, the pair weathered the difficult conditions and gradually shifted the momentum back towards Lowerhouse. They had moved the score to 45 for 4 after 19 overs, seeing off lengthy opening spells from the Ramsbottom attack.

At drinks, Lowerhouse had recovered to 69 for 4 before the partnership continued to flourish. The 100 arrived in the 32nd over, and with eight overs remaining Lowerhouse were well placed on 164 for 4. Haasbroek and Whitehead had added more than 150 together, with both players deservedly reaching half-centuries.

Momentum swung again when Haasbroek and Keagan De Vries were both dismissed in the same over, before Whitehead followed shortly afterwards, holing out to mid-off with the score on 168 for 7. Useful late contributions from Paddy Martin (15) and Shaukat Ali (14) helped Lowerhouse finish on 196 for 9 from their 50 overs.

Whitehead top scored with 78, while Haasbroek made an excellent 52 after rescuing the innings from a perilous position.

Ramsbottom Reply

Lowerhouse started well with the ball, restricting Ramsbottom to 42 without loss after 16 overs through disciplined opening spells.

Toxy made the breakthrough by bowling Parton, before Shaukat Ali claimed the second wicket to leave Ramsbottom 63 for 2. At drinks the visitors were 77 for 2 and the contest remained well balanced.

Unfortunately, Ramsbottom’s professional helped build another significant partnership and Lowerhouse were unable to capitalise on several catching opportunities throughout the innings.

With the chances going down, Ramsbottom steadily took control and eventually reached their target with 43.4 overs gone, finishing two wickets down.

It was a weekend to put behind them for the First Eleven, who will now look to bounce back in their next outing.

Lowerhouse 196 for 9 (50 overs)
Jonny Whitehead 78, Francois Haasbroek 52, Paddy Martin 15, Shaukat Hussain 14.

Ramsbottom won by 8 wickets.
